⛏️What We Extract Is Different
The term "peat" covers a wide range of materials, and the environmental implications vary significantly depending on what is being extracted and from where in the bog profile it comes.
Sphagnum peat moss is harvested from the living surface layer of bogs (the acrotelm) where living Sphagnum moss actively captures carbon dioxide. Stripping this layer removes an active carbon sink and disrupts the biological processes that maintain the bog ecosystem.
Dark peat humus (Von Post H8 to H10) is the fully decomposed sapric material at the bottom of the bog (the catotelm). This material completed its decomposition cycle thousands of years ago. It is stabilized organic matter, not an active carbon-sequestering layer.
We are not harvesting the living surface of a bog. Our product is the material that has already finished its carbon cycle.
This distinction does not make extraction consequence-free. But it is a materially different product with a different ecological footprint than surface sphagnum harvest.
