Why Peat Humus for Turf Management
Sand-based root zones are the foundation of modern putting green construction, but sand alone lacks the water retention, nutrient-holding capacity, and biological support that turf demands under tournament conditions and daily play. Dark peat humus addresses these limitations at the soil profile level, providing a stable organic fraction that improves root zone performance without introducing the risks associated with immature organic amendments.
Incorporating a fully stabilized peat humus into sand-based root zones, including those built to USGA specification, increases both water-holding capacity and nutrient retention without compromising the rapid drainage that these profiles require. Because the material has reached 8/8 maturity on the von Post scale, it will not continue decomposing within the root zone. This distinction is critical. Immature organic amendments break down over time, creating the dense organic accumulation layer that restricts water movement, reduces oxygen diffusion, and ultimately leads to black layer formation. A fully stabilized amendment eliminates this risk.
The high cation exchange capacity of this peat humus allows the root zone to retain applied fertilizers more effectively, reducing leaching losses and lowering input costs over the course of a growing season. Nutrients remain available in the upper soil profile where turfgrass roots can access them, rather than draining through the sand column after each irrigation cycle. At 24.1% organic matter content, the material is highly concentrated, meaning each application delivers meaningful soil improvement without excessive volume.
