Multi-generational peat mining in the heart of upstate New York
Mariaville Materials has been continuously mining peat humus since the 1940s, making us one of the longest-operating peat extraction sites in the northeastern United States. What began as a small, family-driven operation has grown into a trusted supplier for professional growers, mushroom farms, nurseries, cannabis cultivators, and landscaping companies across the region.
Ours is a multi-generational story. The knowledge of how to properly excavate, cure, and process dark peat humus has been passed down through decades, refined with each generation while staying true to a simple principle: let the material speak for itself. We add nothing, irradiate nothing, and alter nothing. The quality comes from the deposit itself and from the care we take in bringing it to market.
Our operation is situated at 11814 Mariaville Road, Duanesburg, NY, in Schenectady County. The site sits in the heart of upstate New York's Mariaville region, an area known for its rich, ancient peat deposits formed over thousands of years of natural organic decomposition.
The mine encompasses 95.5 permitted acres, fully authorized under a New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) mining permit. This ensures every phase of our operation, from extraction to reclamation, meets strict state environmental standards.
Our deposit contains an estimated 3+ million cubic yards of dark peat humus, with depths exceeding 20 feet in many areas. This volume means we can supply consistent, high-quality material for decades to come, providing the long-term reliability that commercial buyers depend on.
Our production process is straightforward and intentionally minimal, preserving the natural integrity of the material at every step.
Raw peat humus is carefully excavated from the deposit using equipment sized to minimize disturbance to surrounding areas. We work in planned sections of the mine to ensure sustainable extraction and compliance with our reclamation plan.
After excavation, the material is spread and dried through a combination of mechanical turning and natural sunlight. This process reduces moisture content to workable levels while maintaining the organic structure and biological properties that make our peat humus effective as a growing medium and soil amendment.
Once dried to target moisture levels, the peat humus is screened to remove oversized debris and deliver a consistent particle size. The result is a clean, uniform product ready for direct use or blending.
Our process involves no chemical additives, no synthetic treatments, and no irradiation. What you receive is pure, naturally decomposed organic matter, exactly as nature created it, simply excavated, dried, and screened.
Mariaville Materials operates under an active mining permit issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. This permit covers our full 95.5-acre site and requires adherence to environmental protection measures including erosion control, water quality management, and a comprehensive land reclamation plan.
Our site has undergone review by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the federal agency responsible for overseeing activities in wetlands and navigable waterways. These reviews confirm that our operations comply with the Clean Water Act and applicable federal environmental standards, giving our customers confidence that they are sourcing from a responsible, fully compliant operation.
